"I love Spain. I have very good memories of the tours I've done with Alejandro Sanz… and even my wife is Spanish, and I have a niece there!" That is the first thing that the trumpeter, José Sibaja, tells after speaking with him to ask about his next visit to the IFOB, from June 12 to 16, 2019 in Pamplona, Navarra (Spain). "I love that country so much, and it inspires me, that even the album that I just released has been titled 'Spanish Air' and is loaded with Spanish music," he tells us.
The IFOB is the international festival of wind bands, organized by La Pamplonesa (the Municipal Wind Band of Pamplona) on the occasion of its centenary, which brings together a handful of first class musicians.
One of them is Sibaja himself, who plays on Yamaha trumpets exclusively, and who has a well-known career as a session musician with tours and recordings with Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan and Niña Pastori among many others), and as a member of the Boston Brass since 2006, and since 2016, as associate professor of trumpet at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (USA). And Jose is also a teacher in our own school online in Trumpetland.
The creators of BlackBinder — the intelligent digital score reader — has largely been the architects of Sibaja and other great artists who have committed to attend the IFOB, where they will play using the digital reader.
"Some people think that the app BlackBinder is only used in rehearse or at home, but no; I'm use it for everything, and each time, I fall in love with this wonderful app. I see sheet music and think of it as something prehistoric," laughs José, who will actually play using BlackBinder, as a soloist on Saturday with the La Lira Wind Symphony from Pozuelo. "We will be performing the European premiere of the Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble by the composer Luis Serrano Alarcón, dedicated to me, which I just recorded with the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony." In addition to this concert, Sibaja will give a couple of master classes: one on Friday afternoon and another on Saturday morning.
Other brass players who attend the event, and who are also "friends" of BlackBinder and use the app, are trumpeters Joey Tartell (professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, who will participate in a presentation, give a jazz concert and a master class) and Pacho Flores (Venezuelan soloist, who will perform with the Municipal Wind Band of Barcelona); horn players Sarah Willis (from the Berlin Philharmonic, who will perform with La Pamplonesa) and Manolo Pérez (from the Spanish Brass quintet, who will teach a master class); trombone player Ximo Vicedo (of the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony, who will perform as a soloist with the Castellón Wind Symphony); and even the famous Spanish Brass quintet (which will perform with the Santa Cecilia Wind Symphony from Alcácer).
Also noteworthy, is a presentation by Phil Ponella, director of the Indiana University Library in Bloomington and a lover of BlackBinder, in regards to digitization in music schools.
