China announces a trumpet competition with a $10,000 first prize


The date of the competition will be July 17-21, 2018 in Fuxin, Liaoning province, and will divide a total of more than $20,000 in prizes. The sign-up date ends on June 17. More information is given below.

We haven’t been able to confirm if there has ever been a competition for trumpet that has had a higher first prize, but it seems we are looking at the biggest first prize for trumpet in history: $10,000 to the person who wins it.

We are talking about the Fuxin International Brass Art Exhibition & Trumpet Art Week, a musical event organized by the China Trumpet Guild, which belongs to the Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Association of China, in collaboration with the Fuxin Dingyihuasheng Culture Media Co., Ltd., which takes place on July 17-21 in Fuxin, China (600 km. northeast of Peking) and counts on a jury filled with well-known names and from diverse countries:

José Sibaja

Recording Artist. Trumpet at Boston Brass. Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University (United States).

Steve Leisring

Associate Professor at the University of Kansas (United States).

Adán Delgado

Principal Trumpet of the Spanish National Symphony Orchestra.

David Scott

Principal Trumpet of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. Associate Professor at the University of Redlands (United States).

John Aranda

Principal Trumpet of the Irvine Symphony Orchestra. Trumpet of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra (United States).

Wacław Mulak

Principal Trumpet of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic Orchestra. Assistant Professor at the Academy of Music in Kraków (Poland).

The competition has 4 categories:

  • Non-professional — for Primary School students (born after August 1, 2004).
  • Non-professional — for Junior Middle School students (born between August 1, 2000 and July 31, 2004).
  • Non-professional — for Senior High School students (born before July 31, 2000).
  • Professional — open to all levels and ages. (This category, Professional, is ideal for those trumpeters with an international profile that would like to try their skills in this international competition. This is where the largest prizes are given.)

Moreover, throughout the event, the invited jury members will give free masterclasses to all the events participants.


Professional Category:

  • First Prize: $10.000 USD.
  • Second Prize: $3.000 USD (up to 2 people can win this prize).
  • Third Prize: $1.000 USD (up to 3 people).

Non-professional Category — Senior High School students:

  • First Prize: 1.000 RMB (up to 3 people).
  • Second Prize: 200 RMB (up to 6 people).
  • Third Prize: Certification (up to 9 people).
  • Honorable Mention: Certification.

Non-professional Category — Junior Middle School students:

  • First Prize: 1.000 RMB (up to 3 people).
  • Second Prize: 200 RMB (up to 6 people).
  • Third Prize: Certification (up to 9 people).
  • Honorable Mention: Certification.

Non-professional Category — Primary School students:

  • First Prize: 300 RMB (up to 12 people).
  • Second Prize: Certification (up to 18 people).
  • Third Prize: Certification (up to 24 people).
  • Honorable Mention: Certification.

How to Enter

Please note, that even though this is Chinese Competition, it is open to all trumpeters, whether it be professional, students, or amateurs, of any age or nationality.

  1. Pay entry fee (the fee and bank information can be found in the PDF document).
  2. Go to this page and fill-out the entry form (if you do not read Chinese, then use the option of Google Translate). The password word to enter the system is: ce7i
  3. Send everything before June 17, 2018 by 11:59PM (Peking time): the entry form completely filled-out and signed, the receipt of payment for the competition, a photocopy of proof of identity or your passport, and a copy of medical insurance for international travel.

Gear-up and participate. If you win the first prize of $10,000, which is a large sum of money, you will also have your name reverberate through history.
