Guillaume Du Fay

ca. 1397 - 1474

Musician and theorist considered the best of his time by his peers.

He was the illegitimate son of a single mother, Marie Du Fayt, and of a priest whose name remains unknown. Although born in Belgium, the first mention of a Du Fay dates from 1409 to 1412, as a child in the chorus of the Cambrai Cathedral in France. In 1420 he travelled all through Europe, serving important noble families such as the Malatestas and the Estes (both Italian), the Pope and the duke of Burgundy.

When he returned to Cambrai, in the last years of his life, he had become the most famous composer of all of Europe.
